RFC: Solar-Powered Yacht Batteries and Design

The client’s goal is to increase the efficiency and storage capacity of solar power to enable extended travel times and increased speeds of its yachts.

With the rising cost of energy and interest in protecting the environment, solar-powered ships are becoming both more practical and more desirable. Currently, the standard design for most vessels involves solar panels covering the roof of the ship and storing the energy in lithium-ion batteries below-deck.

The client wants the boat to travel at faster speeds and for an extended amount of time. Current design and configuration of the panel array and battery storage system constrains the amount of power available. Potential solutions to the problem might involve the construction of a different electrical systems architecture that can hold more energy and draw more power given panel and battery cost constraints.

Technology Reserve’s client seeks expertise in solar-power energy storage. They seek systems improvements to hold more energy to achieve extended travel durations, and to draw greater power to enable faster peak speeds.

An ideal expert partner will have:

  • Battery or hybrid battery solutions that are tested and proven at scale.
  • Knowledge of challenges of solar panels and improving energy storage.
  • Ability to transfer the basic operational know-how to the client.
